New EU regulations concerning THFMA: what does this mean for nail products from 2027?

New European regulations bring changes for certain cosmetic products. One of the ingredients affected by this is Tetrahydrofurfuryl Methacrylate (THFMA).

As many questions are currently arising about this, we explain below what exactly is changing, from when it will apply, and what this means for users and professionals.

What is THFMA?

THFMA is a chemical substance used in certain cosmetic products, including some professional nail products.

The European Union has adjusted the classification of this substance. Under the new classification, THFMA is considered, among other things, a substance potentially harmful to reproduction (Repr. 1B) and a strong skin allergen/sensitizer (Skin Sens. 1A).

This new harmonized classification will apply from February 1, 2027.

Why is the regulation changing?

European regulations impose stricter conditions on the use of substances classified as CMR substances.

CMR stands for Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or toxic to Reproduction: substances that can be carcinogenic, mutagenic, or harmful to reproduction.

Due to the new classification, THFMA falls under Repr. 1B. According to the European Cosmetics Regulation, CMR substances of category 1A and 1B are generally not allowed in cosmetic products, unless specific legal exemption conditions are met.

Therefore, products containing THFMA must be adjusted to the new regulations.

What is Mistero Milano doing?

Mistero Milano closely follows European regulations and anticipates changes in a timely manner. This ensures that nail stylists can continue to work with products that comply with applicable European regulations.

Within the entire Mistero Milano range, only one product contains THFMA: the Bianco Reale White Builder Gel.

This product is currently being re-formulated so that it will continue to comply with European regulations in the future. The adjusted formula will, of course, be without THFMA.

Do you need to do anything as a nail stylist now?

For now, you mainly need to be aware of the change.

We recommend:

• checking your current stock;
• reviewing the ingredient list of products if you are unsure;
• keeping in mind the date of January 31, 2027;
• checking whether you are working with the adjusted formula when making new purchases;
• getting well-informed if you are unsure about a specific product.

You do not need to replace all Mistero Milano products. The change specifically concerns products containing THFMA.

Important: this does not mean that THFMA is prohibited from today

There is currently a lot of information and confusion surrounding new regulations for nail products. Therefore, we want to make one important distinction.

The new European classification of THFMA will apply from February 1, 2027.

This means it is a transition to adjusted products.
